As exhibit builders we’re always looking for intriguing new elements to bring into a booth that will help our clients stand out from the crowd. Flooring is one of those things that is usually pretty stock standard but you could be missing out on an opportunity to attract attendees if you go the grey carpet route.
People tend to notice moving images, lights and other cool things, but unfortunately, they always come with a huge price or “strings attached”. You either need to have a raised floor to hide complicated and expensive electronics, or a truss system to shine moving lights or interactive electronics on a special floor. In the “strings attached” department, the wild card is usually labor. You need to allow the time and money to install these flooring systems, but in most cities you have to navigate union rules that includes hefty overtime pay.
While we love the fact that clients want to ”push the envelope” and incorporate cool flooring into their exhibits and events, we often find out that these floors are out of reach from a budget standpoint.
As it turns out, our wish for a cool interactive floor that engages people of all ages was answered when we found Liquid Floor Tiles. When we first stepped on these tiles, the possibilities flooded our minds (no pun intended). We were immediately entranced by the movement of the liquid floor, which changed shape with every step we took. We set some up in our hallway, and anyone that walked through our office was immediately attracted to these fun tiles, and once they walked on them they were hooked.
As the day wore on and the fast paced environment of the trade show industry took hold, we found ourselves walking over the tiles so we could experience the “calming effect” they have during a busy day.
And here’s what we really like – no electricity, no complicated installation and no hassles! Plus, it takes literally minutes to pick them up and move them to a new location. They not only work great on concrete floors, but on low pile carpet as well.
The colorful liquid consists of water and food coloring, and they’re enclosed in a durable PVC tile with a non-skid foam rubber backing. We wanted to test the durability of them, so we did what came naturally – ran over them several times with our fork lift, then parked the fork lift on top a few tiles while we had lunch. Yep, they’re durable.
